Lyn Spence

Lyn Spence, M.A., LPC, NCC, CCPS, received her master’s degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. She specializes in helping Partners of those struggling with Pornography or Sex Addiction to overcome the trauma of discovery and to work through the betrayal and loss. She also focuses on helping couples to connect and communicate well, and to build a foundation of friendship, acceptance, trust, and commitment.

Lyn integrates the best from various counseling theories using interventions that research has shown to be effective. These include – but are not limited to – Client Centered, Cognitive Behavioral, and Solution Focused therapies, and she likes to identify client strengths, explore ways to increase support, and restore hope by empowering clients to resolve the challenges they may be facing. She works with partners using the Multidimensional Partner Trauma Model (M-PTM) both individually and in support group and uses Somatic and Attachment Focused EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) in her work.

Qualifications – Lyn is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC); a National Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC); a Certified Clinical Partner Specialist (CCPS) through the Association of Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists (APSATS); and is an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing International Association (EMDRIA) certified therapist, trained in Somatic and Attachment Focused EMDR.

NCC – This is a voluntary certification beyond the state requirements for licensure. NCCs must continue with education to meet ongoing certification requirements. Lyn sees this as a way to remain up to date on the latest research and treatment choices, and to demonstrate that she is interested in client safety.

Partner Betrayal/Partner Relational Trauma – As a Certified Clinical Partner Specialist Lyn addresses the partner’s experience through the lens of the Multidimensional Partner Trauma Model. In this model, the partner of someone with a sex addiction is not seen as a co-addict, or co-dependent, but someone who is impacted by events outside of his or her control. The primary focus is on the partner, who is assisted in regaining personal agency, and in transforming his or her story into one of empowerment. Continuing education is required to maintain certification.

Support Group for Women: Making Sense of It All – This is a weekly group that Lyn runs for Partners who have experienced Relationship Betrayal. It provides a place of safety to explore and express what it’s like to be the partner of someone struggling with porn or sex addiction, and to make connections with other women who are in a similar situation. Part book club, part educational, and part discussion, this group is tailored to the women in it. Its purpose is to help each member develop relational safety and gain practical tools to navigate the journey towards good emotional health.

EMDR – A person’s personality and their life experiences can combine to promote health or stress in the person’s memory networks and system. EMDR therapy helps access the way these memory networks are currently stored, then helps move them from a place of emotional activation to a more logical, rational place. This movement of activation has been demonstrated in imaging research that showed neurobiological changes occurring in an EMDR session, and is used in a wide variety of circumstances, including the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is one of the most researched methods of contemporary psychotherapy.

The somatic and attachment focused (SAFE) version of EMDR also includes an awareness of, and addresses, where trauma might be being experienced in the body. It looks at the pattern of relationships and connection a person has. By considering these two things we can provide safe and effective treatment. Lyn has taken advanced training in EMDR and is an EMDRIA certified therapist. This certification requires annual continuing education to maintain credentials.

Marital Counseling – Lyn has completed Level 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and utilizes the Gottman Method in her work. This therapy is based on 40 years of research with more than 3,000 couples. It’s designed to help couples manage conflict, to deepen friendship and intimacy, and to navigate life together with shared life purpose and dreams; all of which lead to a healthier and happier future.

Pre-Marital Counseling – Additionally, Lyn is PREPARE/ENRICH and SYMBIS (Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts) trained. Prepare/Enrich is the leading relationship inventory and skill-building program used nationally and internationally. Both PREPARE/ENRICH and SYMBIS are built on solid research and designed to significantly improve a couple’s connection. Either one is custom tailored to each couple’s relationship and provides couple exercises to build relationship skills. Research has demonstrated a 30% lower divorce rate for those who go through the Prepare-Enrich program.
